The Wine Appreciation group meet on the 1st Monday of every month at The Hayloft from 7.00 pm. The contact for the group is Chris Baker tel. 07779 375 865. The group have agreed to pay £5 per month to cover the costs involved.
The group is lucky to have to such an experience member as John Slater. He is able to organize the wines for tasting and give background information to the different varieties. For some meetings different members have suggested ideas for their sessions.
They usually try about 4 wines that have a connection, like the same growing area or the same grape, so that comparisons can be made. Often these are 2 reds and 2 whites. They have tried a price range from the cheap supermarket plonk @ £3.85 to £4.99 a bottle up to wines costing £9.00 each.
Tom is hoping that they will be able to plan future visits out to vineyards, both local e.g. Renishaw Hall and further afield, perhaps France.
We have 2 vacancies for the group and if you are interested please contact either Tom Hickingbotham on 07511537007 or John Slater 07855416014. John Slater
2022
Once a year we go to a wine tasting but this year Honest Wines of Castle Donington came to us. They presented 5 white wines and 5 red wines and the quality was excellent although some were slightly different to what the group was used to which was very interesting.
Each wine was presented as a question and answer and the evening was enjoyed by all, in fact, it was the best tasting ever. Carl and his wife from Honest Wines were very friendly and knowledgeable.
February meeting 2020 – the group visited Weaver’s Wine Merchants for a tasting session. (see gallery for photo)
