DON’T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!

Each month the Book Club selection is chosen by the Eastwood Library. Over the years this has proved to be very much a ‘love it or loathe it’ scenario but has, at the same time, put forward some very unexpected choices which would not normally have been on our must-read list.

September’s selection The One by John Marrs falls into this category. The novel is set in a time when an on-line DNA matching service is available to find the perfect life partner. It follows the reactions of five people who took the test and tells how the consequences changed their lives.

The initial thoughts of the group on reading the brief synopsis of the book were not very favourable, but how wrong we were!  The novel turned out to be compulsive reading and much enjoyed by the whole group, some even reading it a second time!  Intrigued?  Then why not give it a try over the coming holiday period or add it to your Christmas wish list.

We are a small friendly group who read and discuss a different book every month. The books, which are mostly contemporary fiction, are selected and provided by the Nottinghamshire Library Service. When we arrive at the meeting, the books are already on the table ready for us and are always a surprise. In June we read a post apocalyptic novel called ‘The Dog Stars’, by Peter Heller and this month (July 2017) we have ‘An Officer and a Spy’, a thrilling tale of historical fiction written by Nottingham born author, Robert Harris, worth a read. New members would be made very welcome.                                   Pauline Clayton

We have read a wide variety of books including A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mill on the Floss, Eleanor of Acquitaine, The Help, Animal Farm, The Kite Runner, Gone Girl and The Cellist of Sarajevo. When we have read the book we discuss it and it is interesting to realise that a book we particularly enjoyed may not have been to other peoples taste. It all makes for interesting discussions.

Each month a new set of books is borrowed from the library. Not all books are popular with everyone and no-one has to persevere with a book if it’s not to their taste; the main aim is to enjoy reading and share that enjoyment with others. It’s good to share and it’s fun.

Our current read is ‘The Hundred-year-old Man who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared’ by Jonas Jonasson. (An international best seller about aging disgracefully)B
