The Wine Appreciation group meet on the 1st Monday of every month at The Sun Inn from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. The contact for the group is Tom Hickingbottom on 01773 762333. The group have agreed to pay £5 per month to cover the costs involved.
The group is lucky to have to such an experience member as John Slater. He is able to organize the wines for tasting and give background information to the different varieties. For some meetings different members have suggested ideas for their sessions.
They usually try about 4 wines that have a connection, like the same growing area or the same grape, so that comparisons can be made. Often these are 2 reds and 2 whites. They have tried a price range from the cheap supermarket plonk @ £3.85 to £4.99 a bottle up to wines costing £9.00 each.
Tom is hoping that they will be able to plan future visits out to vineyards, both local e.g. Renishaw Hall and further afield, perhaps France.
Christmas meeting, January 2019 –
We had our 5th Christmas do in January for a change! We had 5 wines –
a Godello (Spain), a Riesling (China!!), a Zinfandel (California), an Amarone (Italy) and a Syrah (S.Africa). All the wines from Sainsbury’s were well received but the Basket Press Syrah, £14, just pipped the Amarone. The ‘nibbles’ were kindly provided by Ann and Colin. Cheers John Slater (see gallery for photo)
September 2018 – I have altered the way we do things so that now I write notes on 5 wines and the group are asked to identify each one, 2 whites and 3 reds. It gets them thinking and they seem to enjoy it. Our last Italian tasting was a close run thing between Roversi pecorino terre di chieti and Valpollicello ripassa from Asda. We have just 2 vacancies if anyone is interested. John Slater
The Wine group attended a wine tasting event at the Albert Hall, Nottingham. There were some 38 wines and 2 gins to be tried. It was an excellent presentation by Sunday Times wines and for 2 hours they all had a party! John Slater
2017 September’s meeting tasting consisted of a chablis and 3 rioja’s(crianza, reserva and a gran reserva). The gran reserva, baron de ley Camino del monte, was full of blackberries with soft tannins and great length at £13 from Morrisons. It proved the favourite.
December 2017 Our Christmas meeting had masses of cheese with crackers and 4 excellent wines. A Tesco finest Gerwurztstraminer was very full and spicy at £9 and a Grant Burge Reserve Shiraz very full fruit flavours, spicy finish and great length at £8 also Tesco. Happy Christmas. John Slater
March 2018 – The group’s 17 members and 8 guests visited a wine tasting in Nottingham at The Albert Hall on Saturday 10th March. A good selection of 31 wines and 3 gins from around the world put everyone in excellent humour . John Slater
We now have 17 members which is the maximum we can cater for, room size etc.
April 2018 – Our chair lady attended our last meeting. They were somewhat talkative on the night as usual. We had an Italian evening and two wines were greatly appreciated. An Obitali bolgheri from Asda at £10.48 (buy two get one free) it was full of black fruit and long lasting. It was a close call with a Tignanello 96 from my cellar. All had a good night. John Slater
